"Just" another fountain in Seville |
Charles did get to peek inside the cathedral and watched as three of the huge 'floats' (not sure what they are called) were carried in an saw the twelve burly men emerge from underneath each one. They didn't even look winded!!! Venturing inside the Cathedral, the primary reason for coming to Seville (where Christopher Columbus is buried), only to discover that the Cathedral was being closed for the rest of the day because of the holiday. Not to be deterred, he lingered to capture some pictures and then left to see what else could be seen nearby.
First up was the General Archives of the Indies, the official repository of Spain's ventures in the New World. One can feel the history dripping off the walls!
Next up was the Real Alcázar de Seville, the Royal Palace. Amazing, breathtaking, and enormous. And that describes the twenty-five jardines or gardens. Any gardener should make this place a pilgrimage site! The rest of palace was a maze of tiled rooms, stunning art, and reminders of Spain's imperial glories.
Making his way into the heart of the labyrinth of alleys that surround the palace, he discovered the Hospital de los Venerables. This is a simply beautiful place and the architecture and the art that is present make one forget that this was once a hospital.
After what turned out to be a lengthy, but delightful lunch, Charles mapped out his strategy to see more of Seville. Little did he realize, until it was too late, that everything he wanted to see was either closed for the holiday (the churches) or for the afternoon (the museums).
Still, Charles considered the day a success since it did include a band (!!!), some religious pageantry, a button (at the cathedral), and some art/history.
Next up is the train/bus to Granada for tomorrow's experience at the Alhambra!
Tally: Museums: 3 today (13 total); Churches: 2 today (18 total)
