A tribute

Last Saturday Charles was spending some time picking up litter along highway south of McCamey. He spotted a faded wooden cross off to one side and went to take a look. A marker at the base of the cross had this inscription:

Upton County Deputy Jerry Austin Register killed at this location in the line of duty. July 2, 1989

Charles decided to come back to clean up the roadside marker and today did just that. He cleared away brush from around the marker, repainted the cross, and then placed a dozen silk roses in the in-ground vases. While we didn't know Deputy Register, it seemed the right thing to do was to honor a brave man.

Belinda's Visit to "Angelo!"

Belinda is in San Angelo, visiting with her mama for a few days. She reports that it is HOT there too! She'll be back to McCamey this Friday, in time for our caravan/ carpool to the Midland Rockhounds baseball game Friday night. The convoy leaves the church at 4:15 p.m. Charles reports that he has some chores to do around the parsonage, so he won't be too lonely without her for a few days.

A slow start to our week

After our typical busy Sunday, our week has gotten off to a slow and relaxing start! Charles has been doing some driving this week, first to Odessa yesterday, today to Big Spring and tomorrow to Iraan! Belinda in the meanwhile has been keeping a low profile, getting some items crossed off her to-do list and resting up before heading back to San Angelo tomorrow to visit with her mother.

Thunder in the Desert, part 4

The second half of the evening involved the World Class corps (the corps that tend to be larger and more experienced). The corps and their scores were: The Academy (Tempe, AZ) 77.45; Troopers (Casper, WY) 79.05; Glassmen (Toledo, OH) 79.4; Blue Knights (Denver, CO) 82.25; Madison Scouts (Madison, WI) 82.4; Boston Crusaders (Boston, MA) 83.3.

Following the first six corps, we enjoyed the intermission by spending some more time looking at the displays. We also met Sara & Eric Hill who were there with the Crane high school band. (Sara is one of their band directors.) Sara and Eric are FUMC-McCamey members.

Thunder in the Desert, part 2

Starting the show were six corps from the Open Class Corps (of Drum Corps International), these are corps that tend to be smaller or are new to the competitive circuit.

The Open Class corps were (in order of their score): Pioneer (Milwaukee, WI) 67.25; Genesis (Edinburg, TX) 68.3; Mandarins (Sacramento, CA) 72.8; Pacific Crest (Diamond Bar, CA) 74.15; Teal Sound (Jacksonville, FL) 74.45; Crossmen (San Antonio, TX) 77.0

Yesterday's drum corps contest was exciting from start to finish! We arrived about 6:30 p.m. so Charles could get in some time in the corps "marketplace," the souveniers sold by the various corps to support their activities. Charles was able to get one button for his collection from The Academy, a corps from Arizona (and a corps Charles didn't already have a button from). He also visited his favorite corps' wagon, The Troopers (from Casper, Wyoming) and supported them by getting a cd of their recent history.
