Arbor Day in McCamey
Today's Arbor Day observance at the McCamey Country Club was a rather wind-swept affair. The McCamey Garden Club and MOPS (McCamey Operation Pride) members planted two trees near the club house.
The two trees were planted in memory of several McCamey residents who have died in the past year. Those honored were:Leslie Adams, Cleatus Brooks (a former mayor of McCamey), Ramona Brooks, Leola Curry, Bernard Christian, Alicia De Leon, Joy Moody, Pomposa Molina, Jaylea Smith, and Henry Watson (a former FUMC-McCamey member).

The sign says it all
The McCamey town sign says it all: Please rain!! We have not had rain since mid-September so we're all praying it happens soon!
Our parsonage back yard is showing some signs of life - the roses we planted last year are blooming (they love west Texas!) and the lillies we planted after Easter 2010 are coming along nicely. Now, if we could just get some moisture!

Tonight's big event!
We had an interesting evening here in McCamey! Charles is a candidate for school board in McCamey and tonight we attended a forum where the candidates could offer a few words to the community. It is easier to deliver a sermon Charles said than it is to get up in front of a group of people and talk about one's self!
Holy Week Activities
We have had a very busy few days since our last blog entry on Wednesday (April 20). Belinda continued her busy schedule working with the VA clinics in Hobbs (NM) and Odessa (TX) plus more training in Big Spring. She's hit the ground running and is enjoying the work.
Charles has been busy all week with getting ready for Holy Week activities. He conducted worship services in McCamey on Thursday and Friday evenings plus a prayer vigil Friday afternoon in Iraan. On Saturday, he spent most of the day preparing for Easter's four worship services.
Add in some yardwork (Charles) and housework (Belinda) and we were ready for bed Saturday evening!
Sunday was a full-court press: community sunrise service (McCamey) and then a breakfast potluck and worship in Iraan; another worship service in McCamey and the McCamey Convalsecent Service in the afternoon. The day was capped off with Easter lunch at Bill & Bobbie Lester's home.

A windy week comes to a close
All week long we've had really strong winds and for several days we had lots of smoke and haze to contend with. The wildfires in this area have really taxed everyone's nerves in many ways.
This morning, Charles spent time supporting the efforts of the Lions Club rose day sale. It was fun to see how the community comes together to support worthy causes such as this.
Belinda returned from San Angelo this evening in time for the monthly supper gathering of the FUMC - McCamey family.

Rio Concho West Dinner Tonight!
Belinda's mother treated her to a ticket to the Rio Concho West's monthly birthday dinner tonight at the clubhouse. This monthly gathering honors the birthday-month honorees with great food and wonderful entertainment. It is always a fun time! Tonight we enjoyed the lovely music of young people from Central High's orchestra. Afterwards, they enjoyed another rousing game of Scrabble, with them scoring in excess of 200 points each! Wow!

A Smokey day in McCamey
The dry and windy conditions have contributed to dangerous fire conditions in recent weeks. This morning, as Charles was officiating at a funeral here in McCamey, the very strong winds out of the southwest drove smoke from wildfires taking place a mere 20-25 miles away.
By evening, the haze had cast an orange glaze over the sun and there was a strong smoky-smell in the air. The local volunteer firemen have been out around the clock battling blazes from Ft. Davis to Odessa. Belinda said there was also fires near San Angelo yesterday, some 100 miles east of McCamey.
