Wisconsin Weekend (part 2)

Saturday in Green Bay, Wisconsin was one of those special days. The weather was very pleasant which was a surprise for mid-November.

Belinda decided to take a day to herself and found a cozy spot to rest and read. Charles, with Belinda's blessing, set out on a day-long adventure of this harbor city on Lake Michigan.

First up: The New Zoo (of Brown County, WI), on the north side of Green Bay. This is a really nice little zoo with a big-time vision of what it wants to be. On this Saturday morning, the crowds were gone and for much of his time there it felt to Charles as if it were his own private zoo!

After that came a visit to The National Railroad Museum. This is one of those neat finds, a treat for railroad buffs and those with a more pedestrian interest. Charles enjoyed seeing Gen. Eisenhower's command train from WWII, the story of the Pullman porters, and of course, sitting the engine house the Union Pacific Railroad's No. 4017, "Big Boy," the world's largest steam locomotive.

Rounding out the day was a must see: The Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame and a tour of historic Lambeau Field. This is more than a sports museum, it is the story of the community of Green Bay and its love for the game of (American) football. The tour of the stadium was really fun and being able to come through the same tunnel that the Packers run out of was the stuff of which goose bumps are made.

In the evening, we visited Charles' family members who live in the area. Greeting us for an awesome turkey dinner was nephews Jason; Joshua and his fiance`, Stacy and their son, Ethan; and former sister-in-law, Kathy Alkula and her friend, Bill. It was fun getting caught up again in person after too many years apart! Looking at old family photos, hearing what folks had been up to and of course, the food! What a treat it was for Charles and another glimpse into the Alkula family tree for Belinda!
